Open for 23 years: Potager.

Picked this place based on the menu, which seemed interesting, and the fact that it had been in business in a residential area of Denver for over 20 years. Had to be good…right….indeed!

First up was a glass of Spanish Rosé followed by the chicken liver parfait. It arrived with a side of really excellent inhouse pickled veggies topped with a mostardo of rhubarb. I’m not much of a fan of rhubarb but the combination with the liver was excellent. Next up were mussels….from the East Coast. They were good but I think I’ve been spoiled by the Penn Cove and Totten Inlet mussels we get here in Seattle. The sauce of basil and tarragon cream was a bit tart for my taste and the cucumber salad on top didn’t add that much flavor. I guess I’m partial to either a wine based sauce in the classic French style or one with Thai flavors.

For dessert I had the Black Forest cake which came topped with chocolate mousse….yes that’s twice the chocolate…cherries, toasted meringue and whipped cream….ice cream in consistency. Delicious. Finished the night with a classic Vin Santo.

The wine list is excellent with selections from around the world; focused on Europe and Spain in particular.

Waitstaff was exceptional. When I mentioned I was asking a lot of questions about the food because I write a food blog, I got additional recommendations for other restaurants to try in the Mile High City!

This place reminds me of an Izakaya……they announce the food orders, as they arrive to the kitchen, to the restaurant guest. Nice touch.
