Very popular place in the old city: Zeughauskeller.

The story goes that the building was built in 1487 and originally housed an armory but in 1929 it was converted to a restaurant.

It can be difficult to get a table at the peak of dinner time. You can make online reservations very easily. I’d recommend you do so….the night we visited it was packed.

The food was very good but not outstanding. However, this place is as much about the unique space as it is the food. The walls are adorned with all manner of antique armor and weapons.

The beer of the night was a local dunkle. I started off with the pumpkin soup which was quite good. My choice for the entree was the wild boar steak…but they were out of the dish so I went with the wait staff’s recommendation…..the venison escalope….the venison was very good but the spaetzle was overcooked and not up to par with the meat. The blaukraut was a good side dish but unfortunately it couldn’t resurrect the spaetzle. Also tasted was the kalbsgeschnetzeltes……pan fried veal  and mushrooms in a white wine sauce served with a side of rösti…..fried hash browns. Apparently rösti is very popular in Zurich…..but, as stated…fried hash browns….nothing more.

Finished with a classic apple strudel.

Service was a bit slow but it was a very busy night.
