Unique and excellent experience: Sura.

First…the space. On a street corner in the Dupont Circle area of DC with a small door and the only sign of life…a flashing open sign. Next…it’s downstairs with the walls papered in newspapers and lastly…the “greeter” at the bottom of the stairs. At that point, you know you’re in for a special experience.

How to best describe the cuisine? Well, the family hails from Bangkok and specifically the Chinatown or yaowarat area so it’s a blend of Thai and Cantonese both with plenty of heat.

Everything I had was a flavor journey and leaned toward spiciness with sweetness to cut some of the heat.  Give the quail egg wontons,  salt & pepper shrimp, and the beef horapa…the spiciest of the three a go. Dessert was a grapefruit brûlée with the grapefruit nicely sweetened by the brûlée.
