Must stop on my list: Tex Drive In.

Home of the best malasadas (Portuguese donuts) in Hawaii, in my opinion. The location is just off the main highway to Hilo via Waimea in a bit of a rundown strip mall. Don’t let the picture painted dissuade you from a visit…and it can be a popular place. There is generally plenty of seating.

The malasadas come plain and with various fruit and cream fillings and are served hot. Their size warrants sharing unless you are really hungry. So, order a few different flavors and share. If you want a malasada experience and live in or are visiting Seattle, they can be had at Super Six in Columbia City.

An extensive walk up menu is available (breakfast, lunch and dinner), in addition to the malasadas. This visit we had the lunch special: kalua moco loco…..a popular local dish found throughout Hawaii consisting of rice, egg and some form of meat…..including spam if you need that fix.

Worth the drive to experience and you can combine it with a visit to Hilo if you are inclined to explore the Big Island.
