A must stop while visiting the African American Museum: Sweet Home Café

I have to admit this is my first must experience restaurant in a museum but this place has received accolades from all manner of sources…from the Travel and Leisure to the NY Times to the Washington Post.

The place is busy…serving up to 2000 people a day but despite that, the food is quite good. It is obviously a large place and the choices are served cafeteria style. Once inside you can wander around to the different stations that have foods inspired by different regions of the country.

Pictured is the fried catfish with slaw and hush puppies as well as the shrimp and grits (Anson Mills no less). The cornbread is of the sweet variety….don’t get me started but I’m not a fan of the sweet form since it reminds me too much of cake and isn’t what I grew up eating. I’m also very aware of the debate about the proper way to make it, but I’ll save that discussion for another time.

Dessert was pineapple upside down cake.

Ice tea…sweet or unsweet….is of course available.
