Small Plates on 55th: Ebb & Co.

First noticed this new place a few months ago and finally got a chance to experience their offerings. I wish I hadn’t taken so long! The owner, Stephanie, has a rotating menu of small plates that you can dine in to experience or take home to prepare. Note: the dining area is on the small side.

The choice the week I visited was a delicious stew of little neck clams from Taylor Shellfish Farms in a stew of white wine, saffron, fennel and Rockwell beans. All locally sourced….of course. The stew was accompanied by a kale Caesar salad with inhouse made sourdough bread. A word about the bread….outstand and perhaps the best I’ve ever had. It’s a must experience.

We prepared it at home which was quick and easy with the included instructions.

Now to the wine: an orange Chardonnay which was an outstanding pairing with the main dish. I’m beginning to look for orange wines and this example from near Vienna was exceptional. Unoaked with notes of orange peel with a slight tartness. You’ve never had a Chardonnay like this.

She also has an outstanding “Happy Hour Kit-Sardines”…think seafood charcuterie. We added some smoked Willapa Bay smoked oysters to round out the plate.

A bit more about her wine selections in addition to orange wines. She also has a very nice selection of Pét Nat or pétillant naturel wines. If you’re less familiar with these, think wines made with a bit of residual sugar which is allowed to complete fermentation in the bottle so that it is a bit bubbly like Champagne but with an entirely different flavor. Need to give one of these a try as well.

Now that I’ve run out of accolades for this little spot near U Village….you have to give it a try.

Generally open Thursday through Saturday 12-6 but check the website for current hours.
